I grew up around commercial laundry equipment. My grandfather Jerry and father Guy taught me how machines sound when they're running right — and how they sound when they're about to fail. This guide, updated for May 2026, is what I wish I'd had written down 20 years ago.

The Three Brands That Actually Matter in 2026

The commercial laundry equipment market has consolidated significantly over the past decade. For vended laundromats in North America, three brands dominate: Dexter Laundry, Continental Girbau, and Speed Queen (Alliance Laundry Systems). Understanding where each excels — and where each fails — is the difference between a store that prints money and one that runs you ragged.

Dexter Laundry: The Vended Standard

Dexter is the most specified brand for new vended laundromat installations in the U.S. market in 2026. The reason starts with one number: 23 minutes.

Dexter's Express wash cycle completes in 23 minutes on the T-series hardmount washers. Speed Queen's comparable commercial cycle runs 30–35 minutes. That 7–12 minute gap compounds across every machine, every day, for 15+ years of machine life.

Dexter T-Series: Model by Model

  • T-300 (20 lb): Entry point, ideal for apartment building OPL or small vended supplemental machines. Cycle: 23 min. G-Force: 200G+.
  • T-400 (30 lb): The workhorse. Most specified washer for mid-volume vended stores. Best price-to-revenue ratio in the lineup.
  • T-600 (40 lb): High-volume machine for busy family loads. Revenue premium of $0.75–$1.50 per cycle over T-400 in most markets.
  • T-900 (60 lb): Mega-load. Blankets, comforters, sleeping bags. Revenue $5.50–$9.00 per cycle. Every serious store should have at least 2.

Continental Girbau: When It's the Right Call

Continental Girbau's softmount washer-extractor design eliminates the need for a reinforced concrete plinth — which is the primary reason to specify it. If your location is an upper floor, an older building without slab reinforcement capacity, or a hospitality/healthcare application where scheduled OPL loads are the model, Continental is the right answer.

Their WD series flatwork ironers are industry-standard in hotel laundry. Their healthcare-grade OPL configurations meet regulatory requirements that vended machines don't address. For those use cases, Continental isn't the second choice — it's the only choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which commercial washer brand lasts the longest?

Dexter and Continental Girbau both have documented 15–20+ year machine lifespans with proper preventive maintenance. Speed Queen also has strong longevity in lighter-use applications. The more important factor than brand is maintenance consistency: a well-maintained Dexter will outlast a neglected Continental by 5+ years. Genuine OEM parts and quarterly preventive maintenance schedules are more predictive of lifespan than brand alone.

What is G-Force extraction and why does it matter?

G-Force refers to the centrifugal force generated during the spin/extract cycle. Higher G-Force pulls more water from fabric before it goes in the dryer. Dexter's 200G+ extraction results in measurably shorter drying times — typically 8–15 minutes less per load versus lower-G machines. At 100+ cycles per day across a full store, this reduces gas and electric costs significantly. In high-utility-cost states, the annual savings on a Dexter install can exceed $12,000–$18,000 versus lower-G equipment.

Why does Dexter's 23-minute cycle matter so much?

Every minute of cycle time directly affects how many revenue-generating turns each machine completes per day. On a 12-hour operating day with 12 washers: Dexter at 23 min generates approximately 31 turns per machine (372 total); Speed Queen at 32 min generates approximately 22 turns (264 total). That's 108 additional turns per busy day — at $3.50 per wash, over $378 more daily revenue on the same floor space and lease cost.

When should I choose Continental Girbau over Dexter?

Choose Continental Girbau when: (1) your location cannot support a reinforced concrete slab for hardmount machines, (2) you're building an on-premise laundry for hospitality, healthcare, or institutional use, (3) your primary model is attended OPL with scheduled loads rather than vended self-service, or (4) you need flatwork ironer capabilities for commercial linen finishing. For standard vended self-service laundromats on ground-floor slabs, Dexter wins on cycle speed and throughput.
